N.B. To switch relations from Taipei to Beijing coincident with the January 1, 1979 Joint Communiqué, the United States agreed to remove all military personnel and installations from Taiwan and to abandon our treaty commitment to defend Taiwan. The Taiwan Relations Act is consistent with both these now repudiated U.S. commitments. We are back in the middle of the unfinished Chinese civil war.
